Slum residents speak on living condition, give insight on polygamy
Legit.ng launched the first episode of the Slum Chronicles series and had the opportunity of meeting some residents of Ago Egan in Bariga area of Lagos who opened up on polygamy and the way of life there.
It was an eye-opening session for correspondents of Legit.ng who got insight on how people living in such condition dare to have more wives and children. One of the residents spoken to revealed that the men often tell women in the community they will have more than one wife before marrying them. Women agree to this term and bear with the men when they eventually take other women.
The woman revealed that she is the second wife of her husband and does not mind him having more wives. According to her, she already has enough children and cannot endeavor to give him more. Thus, she said he is free to have more wives. She claimed her husband has three wives; her union of six years has already produced four children.
The reporter of Legit.ng spoke to some of the residents in Yoruba language as they explained how polygamy thrives in areas like theirs. Another resident, a man revealed that he has two wives. The second woman he took is yet to give him a child as he is still taking care of her.
He then moved on to another resident who revealed he has only one wife but has a girlfriend. According to him, he changes his girlfriends from time to time. He avoids having more than one girlfriend at a time. This particular resident offered to give Legit.ng reporter a wife if he can part with the sum of twenty thousand naira.
He further revealed how he is able to manage his girlfriend and his wife without creating friction between them. The woman whose husband has three wives said that her husband has nine children in all; the third wife is yet to conceive. The husband who earns a living by sewing cloth kept the women apart. His second wife said that they live peacefully with each other.

The reporter from Legit.ng asked one of the residents why they take so many wives and have many children despite their living condition. To this, he responded that it is their level of education and their ability to cater for the family that makes them have many wives and children.
