National ID card: Nigerians without it will not get international passport - NIMC

- With the executive order signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, no Nigerian will now get international passport without the national identity card

- The disclosure was made on Monday, August 5, by the director of NIMC in Ekiti state, Gbenga Ifayefunmi

- Ifayefunmi also says Nigerians cannot be obtain driver's licence without the national identity card

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that no Nigerian will now get international passport without the national identity card.

The director of NIMC in Ekiti state, Gbenga Ifayefunmi, said the new process was due to the executive order signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, Africa Public Sector reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the disclosure was made in Ado Ekiti on Monday, August 5, when the state deputy governor, Bisi Egbeyemi, registered at the commission's office.

He also said Nigerians cannot obtain driver’s licence without the national identity card.

Ifayefunmi said: “It comes with many advantages because you will be asked to come with your national ID card before you can assess government facilities.

“It has unique numbers, social security numbers and can be used for healthcare and education, among others.

“In fact, by virtue of an executive order signed by President Buhari, you cannot obtain international passport or driver’s licence without the national ID card."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), on Thursday, January 31, declared that the payment for issuance of national identity card would begin in 2022.

The NIMC director general Aliyu Aziz, said this at the lunch time reform seminar on National Digital Identity Ecosystem Strategic Road Map for enrollment of Nigerians and legal residents into National Identity Database (NIDB) in Abuja.

The event was organised by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) in collaboration with NIMC.

Aziz urged Nigerians to make use of the opportunity to get registered and have an identity.

He said: “The national identity card can only be issued to Nigerians registered into the national identity system and legal residents who have attained the age of 16 years and above, but the National Identification Number (NIN) is assignable to Nigerians only."
