Just in: 12 killed in fresh Agatu communal clash

There is apprehension in Benue state as 12 people have been reported killed in a fresh communal clash in Okololo community of Agatu local government area of Benue state on Sunday, June 30.
Daily Trust reports that the victims were killed in a clash between the community and residents of neighbouring Abugbe community who unleashed terror against Okololo.
Witnesses in Okololo said some militias hired by the people of Abugbe invaded the Okololo community during worship hours while majority of the inhabitants were in Church and unleashed mayhem.
John Ikwulono, a former supervisory councillor at the local council said many people were feared killed in the attack.
Noting that as at the time of report, he could only identify 12 people, Ikwulono said those killed include a retired military officer, a pastor's son and many others.

Giving a list of those affected, Ikwulono said Mr Baba Odoje, Mr Shaidu Magaji (a retired military man), Mr Oloche Obiabo (Kaddo), Mr Adehi Imaikwu and Mr Maji Baba.
Other victims of the attack are: Ngbede Ibrahim (Ejeh-Akpabana son), Bello-Gene-Galih, Mr Ekoja (Olundo’s husband), Adams Dogara (Pst. Dogara’s son) and Late Francis Idu wife and her two children (there names not mentioned).
Describing the attack as unfortunate, the councillor said it happened when series of peace meetings had held among warring communities in the area and only on Saturday, a day before the Sunday’s attacks.
According to him, the two communities affected had signed a peace pact.
He also added that some persons are missing from the attack while many others including, one Mrs Mary Adakonye, a Health worker, sustained bullet wound and is currentlu receiving medical attention in a nearby hospital.
Reacting to the incident, the Benue state police command spokesperson, DSP. Sewuese Catherine Anene, said she was yet to receive reports about the killing.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the presidency on Sunday, June 30 defended the controversial Ruga settlements programme embarked on by the Federal Government in collaboration with some state governments.

The senior special assistant to the president, Garba Shehu, said the initiative was not meant to serve the interest of the Fulani ethnic group alone.
The presidency also stated that Ruga was “voluntary,” saying that no state was forced to give up land for the project.
