JUST IN: Election official killed in Rivers state - INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, February, 24, announced that an ad hoc staff deployed for election presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers state is dead.
The chairman of INEC, Yakubu Mahmood during a briefing with journalists and some international observers including the United States ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Syminton, said Ibisekin Amachree was hit by a stray bullet on her return from duty Degema local government area of Rivers state.
Praying for the repose of Amakiri’s soul, Mahmood condemned incidents of violence across some states in Nigeria at the polls.

Mahmood said: “Some youth corps members serving as ad hoc staff were also attacked in Osun state. While in all these attacks, election staff sustained injuries, we have unfortunately recorded the first fatality in Rivers state, an ad hoc staff; Ibisekin Amachree was hit by a bullet while returning from election duty in Degema. May her soul rest in peace.”
“We are also aware of the incidents in some parts of Lagos particularly Okota. We are similarly aware of incidents of intimidation, abduction, hostage taking and violence unleashed on election officers on some states notably Akwa Ibom and the burning down of the vehicle conveying materials used for elections yesterday in Dekina LGA of Kogi state,” the INEC boss said.

He said a comprehensive report has been forwarded to the relevant security agencies for a speedy investigation and prosecution of Amachree’s killers.
“We condemn these attacks and we have forwarded the comprehensive reports to security agencies for expeditious investigation and prosecution of those involved,” the INEC chairman said.

Meanwhile, the Rivers state police command has confirmed that an army lieutenant and two others were killed in the violence that rocked Abonnema in Akuku Torlu local government area of the state.
This was contained in a statement sent to journalists by the police spokesperson in the state, DSP Nnamdi Omoni on Saturday February 23.
The statement noted that two other personnel of the Nigerian Army were injured in a shoot out with unknown gunmen.
The police also confirmed the death of two APC chieftains earlier reported by Legit.ng.
