We’re yet to review our position on Rivers APC - INEC

- Rivers state would not field any candidates during the 2019 general elections, INEC has said

- This is coming few days after an appeal court judgement which granted stay of execution

- Recall that in an earlier judgement, the Federal High Court had nullified all primaries of the APC in the state

Few days to the forthcoming general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday, February 6, insisted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state has no candidates for the polls.

The Court of Appeal had earlier granted stay of execution of the lower court's judgement nullifying all primaries of the APC in the state and restrained the INEC from fielding the party's candidates in the forthcoming general elections.

The Nation reports that the INEC national commissioner and chairman, voter education and publicity, Festus Okoye, said the commission had taken a position.

Okoye, at an interactive meeting with reporters in Abuja, revealed that the position of the commission has not changed in respect of Rivers state APC candidates for the National Assembly and governorship elections.

He, however, stressed that if there is a change in situation of things, the commission would meet to review its stand.

He said: “We have taken a decision relating to the issue of Rivers and if anything changes before we take our final decision, the commission will meet and also take a decision. But we have not taken any other decision and we have not repealed our position on the issue of Rivers."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt granted stay of execution of the lower court's judgement nullifying all primaries of the APC in Rivers state and restrained the INEC from fielding the party's candidates in the forthcoming general election.

Justice Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt had nullified both the direct and indirect primaries conducted by two factions of the party.

Justice Omotosho also restrained INEC from recognising any candidates of the APC for the 2019 general election in the state.
