Local hunters reportedly chase Boko Haram fighters from Yobe town

- Suspected Boko Haram fighters who invaded a town in Yobe state were reportedly resisted by local hunters

- Nigerian soldiers were said not to be on ground when the attack was launched in the town

- The hunters succeeded in forcing the insurgents to retreat and return to their base

A report by The Cable indicates that suspected Boko Haram fighters who invaded Buni-Gari, a town in Yobe state, got more than they bargained for when some hunters engaged them in a fierce battle on Sunday, December 30.

A resident of the town quoted in the report, said the insurgents struck around 5pm when Nigerian soldiers were not on ground.

According to him, the hunters succeeded in forcing the insurgents to beat a retreat and return to their base.

Another source quoted in the report, said though the insurgents have been sent out of the town, Buni-Gari has been deserted.

“Many have fled to nearby Buni-Yadi over the fear that Boko Haram members might regroup and launch a deadlier attack. Buni-Yadi is more secure than Buni-Gari. There are soldiers there,” he said.

The attack comes two days after Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, said Boko Haram has not struck outside Borno since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in 2015.

There has been a resurgence in Boko Haram attacks of late. The insurgents have raided different communities in the northeast, killing people and rendering many homeless.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has accused an online news medium of peddling lies in its report claiming that about 700 soldiers are missing and more than 2,000 have been trapped in Baga, a town in Borno state.

In a statement signed by the director of army public relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman and made available to Legit.ng on Friday, December 28, the army said the report is not only untrue but a deliberate mischief to create erroneous impression about the military.

He explained that there is an ongoing clearing and mop up operations in Baga and nobody could give details of the encounter yet.
