Deji Akeredolu, a 37-year-old councillor representing Ado Ward 9 at the Ado local government council, has been shot dead by unknown gunmen at the Onala area of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital.

The incident occurred around 10pm on Friday, December 28, as the deceased and his wife alighted from a motorbike at the junction to their house, Punch reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Akeredolu was a personal assistant to Deju Ogunsakin, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate in the July 21 governorship election in the state. He was also among the elected local government officials suspended by the Ekiti state House of Assembly a fortnight ago.

Shortly after her husband was shot, the traumatised wife was said to have fainted, after shouting for help. She reportedly fainted again on Sunday, December 30, when the remains of her husband were to be interred; and is said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

According to a source, the deceased was shot twice by the assailants who were waiting at the junction in a Camry car.

The source said: “After the gunshots, the first thing we noticed was that the Camry car that had been parked at the junction sped off recklessly. Next was the shout for help by the victim’s wife. We rushed to the scene and found the councillor in a pool of his blood. We rushed him to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.”

The 72-year-old retiree father of the deceased, Jacob Akeredolu, said remains of his second son was brought to his house on Friday night by policemen from the Okeila Division in Ado-Ekiti. He confirmed that Deji had been buried.

The father, who described the slain son as the breadwinner of the extended family, ruefully stated: “Deji was an easy-going, kind-hearted and lovely son. I don’t know why this should happen.”

Speaking with journalists on the development, the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Ogunsakin, said the killing of his aide was a sad development. He further decried the security situation in the state.

According to him, crime rate in the state now is alarming. He called on the state governor, Kayode Fayemi, to ensure that the situation is tackled. He also called on the commissioner for police, Bello Ahmed, to address the situation as Ekiti state is no longer safe for the residents.
