My father stopped talking long time ago - Late Shehu Shagari's eldest son

- Details of the last days of the late former executive president of Nigeria has been revealed by his eldest son

- Bala Shagari told journalists in Sokoto that his father stopped speaking a long time before his death

- He also said his family rejected the Sultan of Sokoto's offer to bury the late Shagari in Hubbare Cemetery because his wish was to be buried in his private home close to his son

The eldest son to the late former executive president of Nigeria, Shehu Shagari, has given details of his father's last days on earth.

Speaking to journalists in Sokoto on Sunday, December 30, Bala said there was no last word from the late ex-president because he had stopped talking long time ago due to poor health.

Bala Shagari said although his father has stopped talking a long time ago due to ill health, he had always wished to be buried in his modest private residence in Shagari town, Sokoto state.

Punch reports that Shagari's eldest son also explained why the family rejected an offer from the Sultan of Sokoto to bury their father at the Hubbare Cemetery - where remains of the late Jihadist, Usman Dan Fodio, were buried.

The Hubbare Cemetery is also an exclusive cemetery for the late Sultans and departed members of the Sultanate Council.

It was also expected that being a ranked member of the Sultanate Council, the late Shagari - a Turaki Sokoto- should have been laid to rest at the Hubbare Cemetery.

“Although there was an offer from the Sultan that the remains of the late President should be buried at the Hubbare cemetery, his will must be respected.

“He willed to be buried beside his son, the late Abdulrahman, at his Shagari residence which was carried out yesterday. There was no last word from him as he had stopped talking for a long time due to poor health.”

“He had forgiven everybody before his death and the only reason why he was not attending functions was because of his Ill-health as he hardly went out for some period," Bala said.
