Why I stood against confirmation of Buhari’s nominees - Shehu Sani

The senator representing Kaduna central at the upper chamber of the national assembly, Senator Shehu Sani has revealed reasons why he stood against the nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari for appointment into the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).

The outspoken senator disclosed this in a tweet on Tuesday, December 11.

“Confirming the nominees of Mr president to the anti-corruption bodies is urgent and necessary. But it’s unfair to do so in view of the fact that some sections of the country are omitted.

“I was one of those who unambiguously demanded that the issues raised be addressed before confirmation.”

According to the president, signing the bill will, “create some uncertainty about the applicable legislation to govern the process.”

The letter was read by Senate president, Bukola Saraki, during plenary on Tuesday, December 11.

Part of the letter read: “I am declining assent to the Bill principally because I am concerned that passing a new electoral bill this far into the electoral process for the 2019 general elections, which commenced under the 2015 Electoral Act, could create some uncertainty about the applicable legislation to govern the process.

“Any real or apparent change to the rules this close to the election may provide an opportunity for disruption and confusion in respect of which law governs the electoral process.
