Meet 21-year-old self-taught engineer who built his own generator at the age of 13 (photos)

- The Sierra Leonean prodigy built his first generator at age 13

In a small village in Freetown, Sierra Leone, a teenager now known as a prodigy emerged. Kelvin Doe is a prodigy who taught himself how to become an engineer.

He built his own radio station in Sierra Leone to broadcast news and play music in 2009. He dispensed news under the alias known as DJ Focus. At a very young age, Doe had already built batteries, an FM transmitter, a sound amplifier, a three-channel mixer and a mic receiver by using discarded metal, cargo boxes and cables.

According to Konbini Channels, young Doe who collected items considered as garbage for his inventions, had been scolded by his family. His determination, however, gave him the ability to keep going.

Doe continued growing in skills and became someone who fixed all his friends' electrical devices. He even created batteries to power lights in small areas.

Due to his achievements in Sierra Leone at a young age, he was invited to the United States and became the youngest person to participate in the "Visiting Practitioner's Program." at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The young prodigy was one of the finalists in the worldwide Innovate Salone Idea Competition. He had built a generator from soda, acid and metal, he wrapped it together with tape.

It was gathered that Doe signed a $100,000 solar project pact with Canadian High Speed Service Provider, Sierra WiFi in May, 2013.

He is now 21 years old and he owns his own company KDoe-Tech Inc. He is also the founder of The Kelvin Doe Foundation.

Kelvin Doe was featured on the Forbes 30 under 30 list as one of Africa’s most promising entrepreneurs.

The respected inventor has been a speaker at TEDxTeen, he has lectured to undergraduate engineering students at Harvard College. He met with world leaders such as former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton and President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana.
