Just in: Commercial tricycle operators protest police extortion in Maiduguri

Commercial tricycle operators (popularly known as Keke NAPEP) in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital are reportedly protesting against alleged extortion by officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force.

According to a Twitter source, @BarkaKachalla, Post Office, the commercial hub of Maiduguri is on standstill now, the afternoon of Monday, July 30,

He tweeted: "Happening now in Maiduguri, commercial tricycle operators(Keke NAPEP) peacefully protesting against extortion by officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force. Post Office, the commercial hub of Maiduguri is on standstill now. @segalink @obyezeks @DrJoeAbah"

A report by Daily Post stated that the protesters, whose demonstration caused traffic jam along major roads in the Borno state capital, are demanding that the police must be impressed upon to stop unnecessary extortion of their members.

The tricycle riders said they embarked on peaceful protest by boycotting operations on Monday, July 30, along Baga road, and other major roads following the continued “harassment, intimidation and extortion” they face at the hands of men of the Nigeria Police Force.

Legit.ng previously reported that the new board of the Police Service Commission (PSC) formally assumed duties with a promise to reposition the Nigeria Police Force for optimum efficiency and effectiveness.

The new chairman of the commission, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, a retired inspector-general of police, said the board would give Nigerians a police force they would be proud of, adding that his team would immediately hit the ground running as there was no time to waste.
