Buratai hands over 184 Boko Haram members to United Nations

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, will on Monday, July 9, hand over about 184 members of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists to officials of the United Nations.

The hand over ceremony would be held in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, Daily Sun reports.

The UN recently declared that the fight against Boko Haram is not over. UN special representative of the secretary-general for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambers, said: “Boko Haram is by no means defeated but certainly weakened. The fight needs to continue.”

Chambers, however, said the UN and the international community would continue to support the region to get rid of Boko Haram insurgents in the Lake Chad Basin.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Muslim cleric, who spoke on the issue of security in the country, said though Boko Haram has been tamed, insecurity has become worse.

He said: “There is no security in the country. I was told that a girl was stabbed in Kaduna recently by thugs who were trying to snatch her phone. They killed an undergraduate just because of a phone. What has Nigeria turned into? During Jonathan’s time, these things were not happening.

"Definitely, the situation now is worse. The economy is worse. Feeding is a problem; medical care is a problem. There are problems everywhere. Nigeria is down. Nobody is secure. The honest people in government have pulled out."

Legit.ng had reported that the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole on Friday, June 15, successfully neutralized some Boko Haram terrorists at Parisu and Takwala, both in Borno state.

The mission followed the discovery, by NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, of activities of terrorists in the 2 locations.

Consequently, the ATF detailed 2 NAF Alpha Jet aircraft, armed with rockets and cannons, to interdict the locations.
