Just in: Former Niger governor Babangida Aliyu taken to court over alleged N2bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, June 26 arraigned a former governor of Niger state and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Babangida Aliyu, in court over alleged corruption.

A single sentence statement from the anti-corruption agency confirmed the arraignment of the former governor.

The statement said Aliyu was in court over an alleged N2 billion fraud.

“Ex-Governor Babangida Aliyu and his then chief of staff, Umar Nasko, (are) currently in court before Justice Yalim Suleiman Bogoro of the Federal High Court, sitting in Minna, Niger state," the statement said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that a former director with the Niger state ministry of environment, Mohammed Shaba Yabagi, slumped during the commencement of hearing of the case of alleged fraud and abuse of office brought against former Governor Muazu Babaginda Aliyu and others by the EFCC.

The report quoted Daily Trust as stating that at the commencement of hearing at the Minna Federal High Court on Wednesday, April 11, Yabagi who is one of the prosecution witnesses in the case slumped during examination by the counsel to the EFCC, Prince Ben Ikani.

The incident resulted in a short break after which the witness came back to give his testimonies and cross examination.

Another prosecution witness and former permanent secretary in the ministry of works, Malam Umaru Bawa, and a retired permanent secretary in the ministry of environment, Adamu Jagaba, also testified in the case.

Legit.ng also reported that Babangida Aliyu recently denied looting the state treasury during his eight-year tenure and threatened to challenge the allegation in court.

Aliyu made the denial in a statement he signed on Monday, April 2, while reacting to the recent release of list of alleged treasury looters by the federal government.
