Over 100 parties may be contesting for the 2019 general elections - INEC

- Over 100 political parties may be contesting for the forthcoming general elections

- The INEC says 138 political associations applied for registration as political parties

- The chairman of the commission says that INEC lacks powers to stop the associations from applying

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the forthcoming general elections in 2019 may be contested by over 100 political parties.

Premium Times reports that the disclosure was made at an elections stakeholders' summit in Abuja on Thursday, June 21 by the chairman of the commission, Mahmood Yakubu.

Legit.ng gathers that the summit was organised with the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), DFID and Christian Aid Nigeria under the aegis of the Voice to the People (V2P) project.

The INEC boss said that 138 political associations have applied for registration as political parties, adding that the commission lacked powers to stop them.

Yakubu also said that over 300 foreigners attempting to register at the voter registration centres were arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

He said: ”As at May 24, an estimated 9 million voters were added to the voters’ register bringing the total number to an estimated 80 million.

”The commission is collaborating with security agencies and formulating administrative procedures to check incidences of vote-buying at polling centres."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said that electronic voting would not be used in 2019 general elections.

Yakubu said this in Abuja on Wednesday, April 11 at the end of the opening of a three-day International Conference of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) in West and Southern African countries in Abuja, themed Opportunities and Challenges in the Use of Technology: Experiences from West and Southern Africa.
