BREAKING: Ex-PDP boss Makarfi declares intention to run for president

- Senator Makarfi declared his intention in Kaduna on Sunday, June 17

- He confirmed his intentions towards 2019 before newsmen at a press briefing

- His declaration confirms earlier reports that he had eyes on the country's number one political position

Former Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Ahmed Makarfi has officially declared his intention to run for president in 2019.

Channels television reports that Makarfi, a former Governor of Kaduna state, made his intentions known at a press briefing on Sunday, June 17 in Kaduna.

He said: “l have been consulting across the country since I left as the chairman of the party. It’s just consultations and not endorsement.

“But it gives you an opportunity to feel the pulse and it will tell whether to go forward or not to go forward. The consultations have been quite positive and I believe it is fair enough to come to the conclusion that one should join other equally capable party men and women who have shown interest in seeking the party’s nomination for the 2019 presidential election.

“At this stage, I have come to the conclusion that it is okay, based on the consultations that I have had. Those who have shown interest are equally capable.

“We do not know how many more will show interest but whatever it is, power comes from God. The party men and women will decide who will be the candidate. I will subject myself to the will of God and the decision of the party men and women whenever it is made.

“I have not written to the party but who do you consult with? It is the same party men and women that you consult informally."

While details of Makarfi's declaration are still pouring in, the move does not come as a surprise to political observers because there had been earlier hints.

In 2017, Legit.ng had reported in one instance that the then deputy chairman of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the divided PDP had claimed that Makarfi had eyes on the presidential seat.

...Makarfi wants a situation where he will tailor-make and tailor-made the convention to suit his interest because he has come out to say that he will be contesting the presidency of the country,” Ojuogboh had claimed.

Makarfi's faction was later declared the rightful occupiers of PDP leadership by the Supreme Court and Makarfi's caretaker committee went on to organise the national convention that brought the present leadership of Uche Secondus to power.
