Manchester United set to rival Barcelona for Clement Lenglet's signature

- Following their disappointing performance in the 2017-18 season, Manchester United have started recruiting new players to strengthen their team

- They have signed FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot in a £19 million deal, while Brazil star Fred is almost done

- Meanwhile, the Red Devils are interested in signing Sevilla 22-year-old defender Clement Lenglet who is also wanted by Barcelona

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is set to rival Barcelona for the signature of Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet this summer.

The Portuguese tactician has already signed Porto defender Diogo Dalot, with Brazil midfielder set to wrap up his move to Old Trafford after passing medicals at the club.

However, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss isn’t done in the transfer market as he is gunning for his summer signing.

Mourinho according to the Sun wants to make the French defender as an alternative for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld in case his deal fails to pull through.

The Red Devils are said to be planning a deal in the range of £31 million for the defender as Mourinho continues to add more depth to his team as reported by the Sun citing Manchester Evening News.

Although, Mourinho wants to make signings that will help him match up with their city rivals Manchester City but a £50million-plus deal for Alderweireld would eat heavily into his budget.

The manager has already signed £19 million rated star Diogo Dalot, while a £52 million agreement has been reached for Brazil star Fred.

He is also said to be planning to sign a left-back, another midfielder and a right winger before the transfer window closes.

The Red Devils vice chairman Ed Woodward wants to sign Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, but he might have to cough out £100 million, taking the club's summer outlay to more than £170m.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is expected to raise funds by selling players like Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind, while Luke Shaw faces an uncertain future.

The former Real Madrid boss was said to have been impressed with the 22-year-old Frenchman during United's Champions League last 16 tie with Sevilla and believes he would be able to handle the rigours of the Premier League.

Lenglet is 'open' to a move away from Sevilla this summer. his agent, Gregory Dakad, told ESPN.

"He [Lenglet] knows he has to think a lot about it and he will take a decision by the end of the month," Dakad told ESPN.

"We have offers from clubs in various countries and he is thinking about what the best decision is.

"He is not ruling out any country in Europe."

But he does not see central defence as a priority position to strengthen - and may wait until he has conducted the rest of his business before making a final call.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Premier League campaigners Manchester United are interested in signing Sevilla star Clement Lenglet this summer as reported by the Sun.

The Red Devils are looking for a credible replacement for their 32-year-old wingback Antonio Valencia, and the France international has been regarded as the man to take the position next term.

United finished second on the Premier League table last term with 19 points behind their city rivals Manchester City and they have resolved to strengthen their squad for competition next season.
