Obasanjo, Nuhu Ribadu behind the destruction of Nigeria - Momoh
- Tony Momoh accuses Obasanjo and Nuhu Ribadu of destroying Nigeria's democracy
- Momoh says Obasanjo barred notable politicians from engaging in political activities outside the law
- He says Oby Ezekwesili was one of the committee members that barred the politicians
As Nigeria marks another democracy day on May 29, Prince Tony Momoh, a former information minister, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nuhu Ribadu, founding chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), of destroyed Nigeria’s democracy.
Momoh said the duo did this by barring certain politicians from participating in the 2007 general elections without recourse to the rule of law.
Daily Independent reports the former minister as saying Ribadu breached the EFCC act which stipulates that he should charge alleged corrupt persons to court after completing his investigations.

Momoh, however noted that upon completion of his investigations, Nuhu Ribadu handed over the case files to Obasanjo, who in turn set up committees to determine who should be pardoned or who is to be investigated.
According to him, based on the recommendations of the committee, many eligible politicians were stopped from contesting election in the country because of Obasanjo’s personal judgement without any court pronouncing them guilty.
Momoh recalled that Oby Ezekwesili, the co-founder of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign who was regarded as ‘Madam Due Process’, was a member of the committees set up by Obasanjo that barred politicians from contesting.
“In my view, he destroyed Nuhu Ribadu because I wrote that Ribadu had been led astray. Everybody liked Ribadu because of what he did in EFCC.
“In his investigations, the EFCC act said he should go to court and prosecute but Ribadu collected all investigations and handed them over to Obasanjo on his instructions.
“Obasanjo on his part, set up committees to address who was guilty or not. From there, it moved to another committee that decided who could be pardoned or not.
“Based on that, they disqualified people from contesting election which was outside due process.
“Unfortunately, my sister Oby Ezekwesili was a member of one of the committees that disqualified politicians from contesting election.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Tuesday, January 23, asked President Muhammadu Buhari, not to seek re-election in 2019 as he is already being pressured to do by some Nigerians.
In a statement: The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement, Obasanjo said President Buhari has performed far below expectation just as he added that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not the solution to the country's challenges.
