As you may know, salaries in Nigeria’s civil services regularly depend on the type of qualification a person has. For instance, the lowest incomes are associated with the lowest education or professional skill grades, while the highest wages come with the highest professional levels. The same is applicable to the salary structure of Nigerian Railway Corporation.
That is, a person who has the qualification enough for the Grade Level 4/Step 1 (further shortened to GL and S respectively) will receive the lowest salary and about N243,000 per year. At the same time, officers at top posts in the civil services with the GL 17/S1 will receive about N4 million annually. The gap is huge yet here it is.
If we divide the above-mentioned amounts by 12, we will get some monthly amounts of about N20,000 for a school leaver with his or her initial skills and about N350,000 for a person who’s qualified enough to work as a director of an enterprise. The smallest salaries in Nigeria are given to those who have no working qualifications in civil services at the Grade Level 1/Step 1. These people will receive about N18,000 per month and, respectively, about N225,000 per year.
Further on, if a person has a diploma certificate, his or her chances of having better wages are increased up to about N500,000 per month and about N45,000,000 per year. This is the GL 7/S1 and the average salary for such a level of professional skills.
It’s possible to advance on both the scale of the grade levels and the steps. However, some civil service employees who reach their GL 12 to 14 and S 11 are stopped from the further advancement in their steps. The employees who get to the GL 15 to 17 and S 9 are also stopped. They cannot receive any salary upgrade any longer until they decide to retire from the civil services.
On the other hand, a school leaver who manages to reach the S 15 while remaining on their GL 4 can suppose to receive about N360,000 per month or about N30,000 per month. An owner of the diploma certificate with the GL 7 and the same S 15 will have about N780, 000 per year and, respectively, about N65,000 per month.
The situation for graduates is slightly different. A graduate at the GL 8 and, respectively, S 15 can hope for about N980,000 per year, which makes about N80,000 per month. At the same time, a person qualified as a director with a higher grade level, for instance, GL 17 and a lower step, for instance, S 9, will most likely receive about N5,450,000 per year or about N450,000 per month.
Officers who have the GL 2/S 1 can expect no more than N250,000 per year and if they advance to the S 15 while staying on the same grade level, they can receive about N300,000 per year. These employees are, as well, somehow limited in their advancement and cannot receive more money beyond a particular stage.
The grade level advancement is significant for officers who can receive about N300,000 at the GL 6/S1 and only about N500,000 at the GL 6/S 15. At the same time, the advancement to the GL 9/S 1 will bring about N780,000. Both the grade levels and steps combined will bring a person about N1,200,000 per year.
Officers who obtain the GL 15/S 1 are able to receive as much as N1,800,000 and officers at their terminating step 9 can expect as much as N2,300,000. The highest payments to the officers are expected when they reach GL 16/S 9. This stage is able to bring them about N5,450,000 per year.
Railways in Nigeria: what has been and what to expect?
Several weeks ago, the Minister of Transportation of Nigeria, Rotimi Amaechi, announced the signing of an agreement between the Nigerian Railway Corporation and General Electric. The agreement includes several billions of dollars addressed at the renovation of the railway system in Nigeria.
The renovation means reconstruction of lines, introduction of new trains, and so on. All this is supposed to improve the current condition of the Nigerian railways and make them more comfortable for the passengers and more profitable for the state.
However, the concession caused a lot of noise right after people got to know about it. The underpaid workers of the Nigerian Railways, who had already organized strikes, demanded their payments before any agreements were signed and any reconstructions began.
Their financial condition was poor enough so they just didn’t want to wait until another project that involved a lot of money. They just wanted to have the money they had earned by their honest labor and nothing more. Now, the situation with the jobs and payments in the Nigerian Railway Corporation seems to look a little better. At least, people say, the corporation is actively hiring new employees.
Job vacancies in Nigerian Railway Corporation
In fact, if you google the matter, you will see how many job offers are posted by the Nigerian Railway Corporation. They are hiring numerous officers, managers, and other employees from practically all spheres. Accounting, engineering, finance, management – the railways need everybody.
Well, this is what can be said about the salaries employees of civil services receive, in general, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation salary scale in particular. The only way for a person to earn more is either to have a good qualification from the very start or to promote their knowledge, abilities, and skills in a smart way to reach the tops.
