Drama as mace is snatched during plenary, lawmakers scamper to safety

- A lawmaker in the Gombe state House of Assembly reportedly stole the mace during plenary

- Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House wanted to impeach the minority leader, Mohammed Haruna

- The move was frustrated leading to the hijacking of the mace

It was serious drama at the Gombe state House of Assembly on Thursday, May 24, as a lawmaker reportedly got hold of the mace and seized it during a session. He fled the chamber with what has become known as the symbol of authority.

Premium Times reports that the incident occurred during an attempt by some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House to impeach the minority leader, Mohammed Haruna, who is a member of the party.

According to the report, the House is dominated by members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The report added that Haruna’s offence may have been that on May 5, he called a press conference to condemn the conduct of APC ward congresses in the state.

The move by his colleagues failed as four out of the eight members of the party in the House declined to support it.

Following the failure of the lawmakers to remove Haruna, his colleague, Abdullahi Abubakar, who represents Akko West, grabbed the mace and fled the chamber while being reportedly assisted by another member, Mohammed Bello.

It was learnt that Bello, who is from Gombe south constituency assisted Abubakar to escape with the mace.

Legit.ng earlier reported that members of Kano state House of Assembly have reportedly voted to impeach the speaker of the house, Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf Ata.

It was gathered that the vote to impeach Ata was secretly done on Sunday night, May 13.

The report said that 21 lawmakers have signed in support of the impeachment and a source confirmed that already the principal officers of the house had been impeached having got the 21 lawmakers to sign for their impeachment.
