Life and times of one of Oyo's most powerful traditional rulers Oba Abubakar Siyanbola Onikepe Akanbi Ladigbolu

In December, 1944, a great traditional ruler in the land of Oyo, Oba Abubakar Siyanbola Onikepe Akanbi Ladigbolu, whose achievements have gone down in the annals of Nigerian and African history, passed on, having witnessed the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorate of what is now Nigeria.

Just seventy years ago (December 19, 1944), His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abubakar Siyanbola Onikepe Akanbi Ladigbolu, then Alaafin of Oyo, after his breathtaking and remarkable 33-year rulership, went on to glory to join his ancestors.

Under Oba Ladigbolu’s rule, the amalgamation of the northern and southern part of what is now known as Nigeria to become a great nation in Africa and beyond was made possible.

In recognition of his efforts, the monarch was honoured with the Companion (of the Order Of) St Michael and St George (CMG) title by His Excellency, Sir Hugh Clifford, who also made the day the Oba received the accolade a public holiday with massive celebration in the land of Oyo.
