My prison experience enriched me - Obasanjo

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday, May 19, recounted his ordeal during his incarceration by the late military head of state, General Sani Abacha.
Obasanjo said he was enriched by his prison experience, Punch reports.
Speaking at the maiden edition of ASIS International, ASIS 206 Lagos Annual Leadership Retreat, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, the former president said his time in prison was more of a blessing in disguise.

He said his incarceration shaped his thought and aided his performance as Nigeria's president. The former president added that he made good use of his time in prison.
Obasanjo said: “My prison experience enriched me. In fact, it contributed to my performance while I was in office. A leader must learn from every situation.
“Although nobody wants to go to prison, I was in prison when I started learning and keeping myself occupied. I wrote four books while I was in prison rather than become a moron and doing nothing.

“But I was sure that the man who kept me in prison would not bring me out and I was as well sure that I would get out of prison. Honestly, the prison experience has enriched my life."
Obasanjo also said he supports the move to review the Act setting up the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to check security threats in the country. He said there was nothing wrong in seeking improvement for the NSCDC, especially in accommodating the private security professionals in the country.

Legit.ng earlier reported that a prominent Yoruba leader, Ayo Adebanjo, had accused Obasanjo of corruption.
Adebanjo said the former president has no moral right to accuse anyone Nigerian of being corrupt. He added that Obasanjo only had N20,000 as at 1999 when he was released from prison but enriched himself during his tenure as the president of Nigeria.
