nPDP members set to pull out of APC over failed congresses, others

- Ex-chairman of the nPDP Baraje says its members and APC leadership will meet for discussions on Monday, May 21

- The meeting, he says, will start at 2pm and all matters bothering the group will be discussed

- He said if the discussions failed, the group would withdraw but will not do it immediately

The members of a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) called the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) are set to withdraw from the ruling party after the expiration of their recent ultimatum to the leadership of the party.

The Nigerian Tribune reports that should last-minute efforts by the national leaders of the APC and members of the nPDP who are expected to meet Monday, May 21, fail, the faction would leave the party.

A former acting chairman of nPDP Abubakar Kawu Baraje told pressmen in Ilorin, Kwara state capital, on Sunday, May 20 that Monday’s meeting will start at 2.00pm.

Baraje slammed internal conflicts within APC and claimed the situation led to holding of parallel state congresses in around 21 states.

He regretted that what members of the nPDP are witnessing in the APC is worse than they experienced in the PDP.

The report however quoted Baraje as saying that the nPDP members would not immediately pull out of the APC if the party fails to meet their demands.

According to him, they would still try to meet with several leaders across the country to stop what he termed as impunity within the party.

He said: “The last time we met here (Baraje’s house) in 2016 I told you that the way the party was going on we were on the road to perdition.

“If you look at the letter we wrote, we never said we gave an ultimatum but we advised them; we hinted the party because of the ongoing primaries of the party. Now the party has invited us, exactly on the seventh day of the letter and they wanted us to meet that same day but because we were speaking for several leaders across the country we told them we couldn’t meet that same day so now they have scheduled a meeting for tomorrow (Monday) anytime from 2 pm.

“We have travelled a long way with the APC and now we are seeing things worse in APC than in PDP. If we the leaders are worth the name, we should be bold enough to speak about it.”

Legit.ng reported earlier that ahead of the 2019 general elections, the PDP leadership is currently under intense pressure from the coalition of 36 political parties and the new PDP bloc within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to change its name as a condition to form an alliance.

Investigations by Sunday Punch, revealed that the PDP and the various parties would have metamorphosed into a mega political party if the leadership of the main opposition had succumbed to the pressure to change its name before now.

Majority of PDP leaders were, however, positively considering the option of a name change as a sacrifice the former ruling party would make in order to defeat the APC in 2019.
