More than 50 Palestinians killed in Gaza protests - Health officials

Health officials have accused Israeli forces of killing more than 50 Palestinians in Gaza on Monday, May 14.
The officials said the 58 Palestinians were killed at the boundary fence with Gaza on the same day the United States of America opened its new embassy in Jerusalem.
The victims, Washington Post reports were gathered on the edges of the fenced-off and blockaded territory following the 'March of Return' protest. The protesters mainly carried their children and flags into the arena.

Unknown to the protesters, Israeli forces were not ready to allow a breach even as organisers of the protest urged the crowd to burst through the fence.
While ambulance screams and gunshot leading to the death of many filled the air, no soldier was hurt in the process which has drawn global condemnation of the excessive use of force against the protesters.
Nirma Attalah, a relative of a victim, said her 22-year-old brother was killed two weeks ago. She said he was in the area with her entire family. “My brother was shot in the head in this place. We are here for Jerusalem, for Palestinian land," Attalah said.

Many of the victims, Legit.ng gathered, include children as young as six years old.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has described the action by the Israeli forces as outrageous human rights violation. The UN said that the perpetrators of the act must be held to account.
The Human Rights Watch also described the killings as a 'bloodbath'.
Legit.ng earlier reported that the US opened its new embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, May 14.
The embassy was moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem following Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Many Palestinians were reported to have gathered for a protest along the perimeter fence that separates Israel and the Gaza Strip as the embassy was officially opened.
