The Memorial University of Newfoundland was founded in 1925 as a Memorial University College. In 1943 it received the status of a university, and today it is the largest on the Atlantic coast of Canada. Memorial University was one of the first to attract students from abroad: today out of 17,000 students, almost 1,000 are foreigners.
