Buhari's war against terrorism gets boost as Germany donates 5 gunboats to Nigerian Navy

The German government has donated five gunboats to Nigerian Navy to fight insurgency in the Lake Chad area of the northeast.
Vanguard reports that Consul-General of Germany in Nigeria, Ingo Herbert, on Tuesday, March 13, at the handover of the boats in Onne, Rivers state, said the development was a positive vibe for Germany in deepening its partnership with Nigeria and helping build peace and development in the country.

Legit.ng gathered that Herbert said: “The five boats are part of the Greater Initiatives Germany to enhance peace and security in partner-countries and fight against terrorism. The maritime space sensitively accommodates a lot of activities and movements and therefore, prone to security breaches.
"These boats will not only primarily contribute in your fight in the northeast, but also fight illegal fishing, oil theft and other maritime crimes.”
Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, in his remarks, said that Germany had earlier supported the Nigerian Navy in provision of MTU series training engines as well as training of 23 naval personnel in Germany.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the Nigerian Navy said it seized a large vessel, MT Breakthrough, for allegedly transporting 4,574 metric tons (5.790 million litres) of crude oil.
Captain Victor Choji, the executive officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, Port Harcourt, told newsmen on Friday, February 2, that the product was suspected to have been stolen from pipelines in Niger Delta, adding that 11 sailors were arrested on board the vessel, NAN reports.
