Involvement in police functions overstretching military - Army personnel

- Military personnel fault the fact that a country with a population of 192 million has less than 400,000 police officers

- They say their primary role is territorial protection as against constant involvement in internal operations

- Vice President Yemi Osinbajo speaks on the reason he and his boss have not visited some places attacked

Military personnel have stated that the army’s involvement in routine police functions in about 32 states across the federation is overstretching their officers and men adversely.

Daily Trust reports that senior military officers who raised the issue at the Senior Staff Course 40 Symposium at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Jaji, advocated for more recruitment and training of police personnel to live up to the charge.

The personnel faulted the fact that a country with a population of 192 million has less than 400,000 police officers.

The officers noted that the primary role of the army is territorial protection and not constant involvement in internal operations.

Meanwhile, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has spoken on the reason he and President Muhammadu Buhari have not visited some communities attacked recently.

The federal government has been criticised severally by many Nigerians for not showing empathy to victims of violent attacks by physically visiting them.

President Buhari and Osinbajo are also yet to visit Benue, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba states which were also subjected to attacks in recent times.

Speaking with some journalists in Lagos over the weekend, Osinbajo said while the government has expressed sympathy with the people, condolence visits alone would not solve the problem.
