Each country’s economy depends on its manufacturing activities. The manufacturing industries in Nigeria is an economic sector that brings approximately 10 percent of total GDP (gross domestic product) each year. Millions of people are involved in producing household goods, consumer products, automobiles, agriculture, etc.
According to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s 2017 PMI report, while the whole country experienced the worst recession in its economic sectors in twenty years, its manufacturing sector kept growing and expanding.

Manufacturing industries in Nigeria
The Nigerian manufacturing sector has many different types. We will list the most important ones in the country’s development and growth.
Food industry
This type of manufacturing industry is responsible for producing food and drinks that are further delivered to the citizens. It can be salt, sugar, flour, malta drink, energetic drinks, coffee, bottled water etc.
Many companies in Nigeria are involved in food and drinks production.
Paper products industry
A large number of manufacturing companies in Nigeria are involved in making paper, paper products, and pulp. The country has many raw materials so making paper is common here..
Textile and apparel production industry
These are actually three different types of the manufacturing industries. We combined them into one type as they are related to similar processes of making fabric from fiber and turning it into clothing. The process also involves making different textile products that can be sold both to customers and other manufacturers.
Most manufacturing companies are automated. Some companies are using different fibers (synthetic, natural) to make yarns and threads. Others turn these products into ropes, twine, and fabric with extra properties (water resistance, stain resistance etc.). Fabrics are used to make apparel and different household products (rugs, curtains, sheets etc.).
Chemical manufacturing
Chemical plants are involved in transforming biological and chemical materials into something new or separating into parts. Such plants also help in producing medical pills, mixtures, and syrups. Some of them make food, cosmetic, paint, polyurethane, and other chemicals.
Leather and footwear production
The procedures with leather are always pretty complicated. They include the preparation stage, leather tanning, and then crusting. Different companies also make sure to coat the leather surface before offering their products to other firms and customers.
Of course, the leather type influences the number of steps in the manufacturing process. Besides, the further goods are being cut, assembled, sewn, skived etc. to produce leather shoes, apparel, leather for furniture, household goods, wallets, bags and so on.
Furniture and wood products
Big manufacturing companies that work with wood and lumber to produce new products usually get raw materials form Nigerian tree branches, logs, and trunks. The processes include several steps and the wood after all the manipulations can be used for producing numerous goods such as office and home furniture, pallets, wooden toys, cardboard, packaging, firewood etc.
Metal manufacturing
This type of manufacturing industries in Nigeria includes both primary and fabricated metal production. The process includes various stages such as metal cut, bending, assembling and so on. It is closely related to engineering sphere because many metal products are assembled and built using designer scratches.
Metal manufacturing companies produce useful equipment for building houses, metallic frames, railings, stairs etc.
Computers and electronic products
Just like many other countries, Nigeria as its own companies that manufacture computers, software, and hardware for personal needs and factories. Modern computers can control the production process (all stages of it) and simplify the work on factories and plants.
There are different Nigerian firms that produce computer hardware and accessories, as well as various electronic products.
Coal products and petroleum
Nigeria produces its own asphalt coating. This is possible thanks to petroleum and coal manufacture companies. They can refine the original material into something useful. Usually, the crude petroleum is transformed which results in lubricating oil production.
Rubber and plastics manufacturing
Plastics can substitute rubber this is the reason why these two types of manufacturing are combined. Still, many companies work with either plastic or rubber to produce their products (shoes, fittings, industrial belts, thermoset plastic products etc.).
Mineral products (non metal)
Nigeria mines different non-metallic minerals. The raw materials range from clay and sand to stones and gravel. Manufacturing companies use these materials to cut, grind and shape them into new products such as glass and glass products, bricks etc.

Made in Nigeria products
The country is rich in different raw materials that serve the basics for manufacturing goods. There are many manufacturing companies and firms that produce various products to millions of Nigerians.
Thus, Dangote Group (one of the best-known firms in the market) produces sugar, cement, oil, steel, salt, textile, and other goods.
Nestle Nigeria produces coffee, seasonings, soups, bottled water, cereals (that are so popular to eat for breakfast), frozen foods etc. Many household products are also made in Nigeria. PZ Cussons is one of the famous manufactures of soap, bath products for babies and adults.
There are also many other locally established and foreign companies (that have a local office and production in Nigeria) that manufacture various goods for millions of Nigerians.
