Third Mainland Bridge
One of the most well-known African bridges also has a second name. It is officially called IBB bridge. These three letters are a popular abbreviation of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. IBB was the military Head of State (President of Nigeria) in 1985-1993. This retired Nigerian Army General presented this incredible creation to the public 28 years ago.
Being officially opened in 1990, the bridge looks elegant, wide and allows good flow of traffic crossing it through the eight lanes. It was constructed by Julius Berger company.
The history behind the ‘second’ name Third Mainland is simple. There are 3 bridges that connect the mainland to the island in Lagos. IBB is simply referred to as the third one with the first and second one being Carter and Eko bridge.
