- A new primary health facility and solarised borehole has been commissioned in Cross River state

- No fewer that 10,000 residents in the area and beyond are expected to benefit from this

- While the health facility will help curb the menace of traditional birth attendants and herbalist patronage, the solar water borehole will provide clean portable water for the people

A new primary health facility and solarised borehole expected to benefit 10,000 residents, has been commissioned in Cross River state.

Legit.ng gathered that the facility is located in Ekajuk community of Ogoja local government area of the state.

Further checks revealed that it was facilitated by Community Social Development Programme (CSDP), Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) and the community.

The center is one of the many centres built to provide quality healthcare to the people by the state government and its partners.

Commissioning the facility, Dr Betta Edu stated that the newly opened health centre will champion the reduction of maternal new born and child mortality in the community and provide clean water for the communities around.

According to her, the present Cross River state government is a people's centered and successful government because it placed priority on the health care of its citizen.

She further stated that the government has changed the health landscape by ensuring timely payment of health workers as well as provision of quality and affordable healthcare to every Cross Riverian through its Ayade Care Scheme project.

Her words: “We have a pro-health governor who has been so supportive to the attainment of universal health coverage in Cross River state."

She said the newly opened health facility will help curb the menace of traditional birth attendants and herbalist patronage in the area and the solar water borehole will provide clean portable water for the entire village whilst equally assuring them that the purpose of the facility will not be defeated.

Dr Edu who carried out a hand washing campaign in the community, taught the children and mothers how to wash their hands to prevent diseases. She further tasked women and everyone in Ekajuk and neighboring communities to make use of the health center and stop patronizing herbal homes for treatment.

Speaking at the event, a representative of the community thanked the state government CSDA and every partners of the project for providing quality healthcare in the region.

He noted that the community will take full advantage of the facility by regularly mobilizing and making use of the center. He also rationed the timing of water use at the facility stating that the entire village can fetch water at the health centre between 12noon and 5pm only.

Late last year, Dr Edu was given the African Icon of Medical Renaissance Award for meritorious services by three organisations.

The awards were from the Pan African Students Movement, African Students Union Parliament and the Perpetual Ugbang Foundation.

The organisations said the award is in recognition of her giant strides and immense contributions to the growth and development of the healthcare delivery system in Cross River state and Nigeria at large.
