Herdsmen-farmers crisis: Council chairmen escape gunmen attacks in Taraba state

Chairmen of Takum and Wukari local councils of Taraba state, Shiban Tikari and Daniel Adi, on Sunday, January 28, escaped being killed by gunmen in different locations in the state.

Adi was attacked by suspected herdsmen who were said to be uncomfortable with the recent implementation of the open grazing law, while Tikari was attacked by armed bandits, The Guardian reports.
Legit.ng gathered that Adi confirmed that he was under severe attack by suspected herdsmen in Gindi Doruwa, a few kilometers to the administrative headquarters of Wukari local council.
According to him, on the evening of Saturday, January 27, some suspected herdsmen attacked and killed a Tiv man on his farm, which prompted him and his security personnel to visit the village on Sunday, January 28, to ascertain the situation.
He said: “On sighting me and the security personnel, which included the police and the Civil Defense Corps, the herdsmen opened fire on us but the security overpowered them so they ran away.
"We apprehended three men who later confessed that they were called for reinforcement by their colleagues whom he described as herdsmen."
He added that those arrested have been taken to the police command in Jalingo for further investigation.
It was learnt that armed bandits made away with Tikari’s driver but he was later released.
Senior special assistant to the governor on public affairs, Emmanuel Bello, confirmed the reports, adding the sad event occurred on Tikari’s way to the nearby Donga local council for a thanksgiving service.
David Misal, police public relations officer, also confirmed the report, saying the incident in Takum was a robbery attack.
According to him, the armed robbers snatched Tikari’s car. He added that the attack was launched in Wukari and that details of the attacks were yet to be made available to the command by the divisional police officer in charge of Wukari council.

Legit.ng previously reported that a report indicated that the 10-man working committee constituted by the National Economic Council to end attacks by herdsmen had decided that every state should design its own solutions.
According to the report, the committee proposed that the states should come up with the solutions after a rigorous consultative process with all stakeholders.
