Why we must stop talking about 2019 now - Governor Tambuwal

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has urged those already discussing or clamouring for elective positions in 2019 to stop because it is distracting current mandate holders.

Tambuwal spoke in an interview with select journalists saying it is a distraction to talk about 2019 when political office holders just crossed the halfway mark of the four-year tenure.

The governor said instead of such discussions, concentration should be more about true governance in the country.

“I don’t know why you are asking me to comment about 2019 elections when we only just crossed the half way mark of the mandate entrusted to us in 2015.

“Talking about politics of 2019 in 2017 is not helpful. The journey to 2019 is still long. When we get to that bridge, we will cross it.

“This is what I can say for now. People clamouring for political activity at this stage are only distracting mandate holders.

“We have over a year plus and I wonder why people are trying to jumpstart political activities. Elective office holders need to discuss more about governance.

“By the time you raise issues of 2019 in 2017, you are distracting the entire polity. Discuss 2019 when the election season is upon us. But for now, let us discuss governance issues.

“We cannot move from governance to politics, it is a complete distraction because campaigns are full time.

“So, I don’t encourage anybody in the state to try to disengage us from governance mode and take us into politics mode. We should wait for the appropriate time to do this,” The Point quoted him as saying.

Legit.ng earlier reported how former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, said that he has not made up his mind to run for president in 2019.

It was gathered that he told VOA Hausa when he featured on a magazine program on Tuesday, December 19, that Nigerians will know when he eventually takes the bold move.

He said: “For now I have not made up my mind. When I decide, I will let the world know.”
