Tonto Dikeh and Mercy Johnson beef: what actually happened?
First of all, as you probably already knew, these are some of the most famous and well-paid actresses in Nollywood. They are always on set, working and earning a lot of money. You might have thought that neither Tonto Dikeh nor Mercy Johnson had actual reasons for start a feud. However, there were significant reasons why these two women had a strong dislike for each other.
Primarily, the fight was initiated by Tonto Dikeh and her angry outbursts on social media. She accused Mercy Johnson of being a neglectful mother. It all started four years ago, all the way back in 2013 when Mercy had just returned to the filming set right after the birth of her little daughter Purity, who was only a few months old at the time.
Tonto Dikeh decided to express her strong opinions on her social media account, judging Mercy Johnson for returning to set when her child needed her the most. Tonto’s tweet was about how Mercy needs a husband who would care about her, which was a direct accusation of Mercy’s husband not being good enough for her and not doing his job properly.
Many of Tonto Dikeh's colleagues strongly disagreed with her opinion, saying that she was too harsh on Mercy, and other people’s personal life was none of her business. However, these words did not stop Tonto. Instead of apologizing to Mercy Johnson, she went even further by posting another tweet where she called Mercy’s daughter a “witch b*tch” and advised the working mother to go back home and nurse her instead of filming. Mercy did not respond to these tweets directly. She simply minded her business. However, other Nigerian celebrities, particularly Nonso Diobi, sent her full support and respect.
Since then, the media outlets have been particularly attentive to the subject of the beef between the two actresses. Newspaper articles and online websites have been speculating on why Tonto had such a negative opinion about Mercy, and why she allowed herself to let out her anger on Twitter. Lots of Nigerian actors and celebrities who work in the industry are sticking to the opinion that Tonto let her temper take over her just because of her jealousy towards Mercy. The insiders claim that Tonto Dikeh has always considered Mercy Johnson as a rival actress, who could possibly steal the spotlight from her along with all her fame and attention from fans.
Some people also claimed that while Mercy was pregnant, Tonto was enjoying the best time of her career – she received a lot of prestigious and lucrative offers from the best Nigerian film producers. Since Mercy was not around due to her pregnancy, Tonto was a number one actress, and this resulted in her becoming wealthy, rich, and successful.
So, when Mercy came back after giving birth, Tonto simply evaluated her as a rival and this was what caused her anger towards the working mom. This would have made sense considering how Tonto openly told her to nurse the baby and criticized her whole family. However, these are only speculations by the fans and media journalists, and even the insiders might not know the whole truth. The real reasons for her outburst are known only by Tonto Dikeh herself.
In one of the older interviews which came out before the whole feud, she spoke about her feelings towards Mercy. She opened up, saying that she and Mercy were never close friends like everyone thought. She said that she does not know a lot of people in the industry personally; however, she has to learn to work with them regardless.
Tonto pointed out that she demonstrates affection towards her colleagues on set and they act very friendly to each other, but it does not mean she is close friends with them outside the filming set. She also confirmed that she and Mercy only acted in a few movies together so there is no deep friendship between them, but there was no quarrel either. Now it is hard to say if she was telling the truth in that interview or something really happened between them. Anyway, only Tonto and Mercy know for sure.

Tonto Dikeh and Mercy Johnson reconciliation: how and when did Tonto apologize to Mercy?
It is true that you might never understand some things before you experience them on your own. It was only when Tonto became a mother herself that she realized how wrong and thoughtless her statement towards Mercy’s little daughter was. As a part of her 2017 New Year resolution, she decided to cool down her fiery temper and apologize to everyone she hurt in the past. Since Tonto Dikeh promised herself to become a better person after motherhood influenced her, the first thing she did was to write a heartfelt apology to Mercy Johnson.
Her moving letter was surely unexpected, but it touched many people’s hearts and made fans look at Tonto in a different way. In the message addressed to Mercy, she said that since she became a mom she could not stop thinking about her cruel words towards Mercy’s child in the past, and admitted to her wrongdoings. She apologized not only to Mercy, but also to the fans who she upset with her words, and said that Mercy’s little daughter absolutely did not deserve being a victim of her emotional breakdown.
In addition, she confessed that since she found God and became religious, her life changed for the better and she thought of many things from different perspectives. In conclusion, she wished Mercy a happy New Year and told her to take her time with processing the letter, but asked for an eventual forgiveness.
Mercy responded to her former opponent quickly – in less than an hour. She posted a response saying that she was crying while reading her confession. She also said that she always kept Tonto in her prayers and saw her as a good person and that she forgave her almost immediately. Finally, she wished Tonto a lot of peace and happiness in her life and said she hugged her tightly, hoping that God will bless her.
So, the two famous Nollywood actresses are no longer fighting each other and they have settled their conflict peacefully. Thankfully, Tonto Dikeh admitted her mistakes and sincerely apologized to Mercy Johnson for them. We can only hope that motherhood will be the best influence on both of them, and they will never start a beef with each other again.
