1 dead as herdsmen, farmers clash in Nasarawa

One person has reportedly been killed after a clash broke out between farmers and herdsmen in the Awe local government area of Nasarawa state.
The Punch reports that the death of the 28-year-old man, Hassan Papalolo, was confirmed by the police.

It was reported that three other persons were also injured in the skirmish.
Idrisu Kennedy who is the state police spokesperson also confirmed the attack.
He explained that the deceased was one of the youths that went to protest the destruction of their farmlands by Fulani herdsmen.
The police spokesperson explained that the youths invaded an assembly of Fulani herdsmen in protest over the attack on a farmer, Yunusa Makeri, by suspected herdsmen and it resulted in a serious fight.
He said: “The deceased was killed in Awe market during a skirmish between some youths and Fulani herdsmen immediately after the injured farmer, Yunusa Makeri, and two herders were brought to the general hospital with machete wounds.”
More police officers have been deployed to the area to maintain peace.
Alhaji Abubakar Umar who is the Emir of Awe had to beg the youths before the injured Fulani herdsmen could be given medical treatment.

Alhaji Muhammed Hussaini who is the state chairman of the Miyatti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in reaction said the herdsman who destroyed the farmland had been arrested.
He however accused the Awe youths of overreacting saying the matter should not have degenerated into a crisis.
Meanwhile, a 21-day ultimatum was issued by the Niger state government to herdsmen and farmers in the state, ordering them to surrender all illegal firearms in their possession, The Cable reports.
The order was given by the state’s director-general of nomadic affairs, Ardo Babayo, during a meeting between both groups in Paiko, Paikoro local government area of the state, on Wednesday, November 8.
