Keep reading to learn more about these differences.
Just like every other country in West Africa and the tropic lands, there are only two major seasons in Nigeria namely:
- dry season
- raining season
Here we will be talking only about the raining season.
The rainy season is the planting season in our country. If we are to talk about Nigeria in general, it begins in the late weeks of the month of February and ends in October. The raining season is influenced and controlled by the wind from the South Atlantic Ocean known as the Tropical Maritime airmass or South West Wind.
However, the raining season does not begin in February in every part of Nigeria because the Tropical Maritime airmass takes a long time to cover the whole country. The rain begins in the southern part of Nigeria around February and does not reach the northern part of the country until around June. So, the raining season begins a little bit later than February in the Northern parts of Nigeria.

The raining season in most parts of Northern Nigeria begins in the month of June/July and ends in September. Most parts of Northern Nigeria experience the peak of the rainy season during the month of August, although not as high as the heavy rainfall experienced in Southern Nigeria.
