IYM declares readiness for 'war' against northern youths

- The Igbos have become highly provoked by the notice given their kinsmen by some northern youths to quit the region

- Evang Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko of the Igbo Youth Movement issued a warning to the northern groups and called their threat childish

The Igbo Youth Movement (IYM) has warned that it is prepared for to fight against any provocation coming from the north.

Reacting to the three-month notice handed Igbos in the north by some groups to leave the region, the IYM said the people of the south-east were not scared of war.

Evang Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, the founder of the IYM, described the notice from the northern groups as childish in a statement sent to newsmen.

According to Ugochukwu, instead of issuing such a threat, the northern coalition should have written to the National Assembly and other world bodies for a referendum to be held.

The statement read: "The statement from a hitherto unknown northern group is primed to deliver a message to the whole world that some people prefer bloodshed to peaceful restructuring of Nigeria.

“The non-existent group merely represents an attempt by the sectional security apparatchiks to intimidate the struggle to reconstruct Nigeria, in their blind and unintelligent attempt to sustain the clearly unworkable status quo.

“If they were serious, they would have addressed the FG to grant Biafra freedom to secede, but they are childishly targeting Igbo property in the North, without advancing total complete split of the country.

“Igbo property in the North have always been used to blackmailing our people, while the mindless oppression continues.

"We therefore plead with this unknown group to write to the National Assembly, northern leaders and the United Nations, to as a matter of urgency, grant a referendum on the future of Nigeria. That way, everybody will take them serious.

“Targeting our properties in the North do not frighten anybody, we are used to that. We beg them to amend their childish statement to demand for an early referendum.

"That would make more sense. Our people are living in hell already. We are not scared of war mongering, Referendum is the way to go.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reports that the Kaduna state government has ordered the immediate arrest of persons who signed a statement ordering Igbos out of northern Nigeria.

The state government in a statement issued by Samuel Aruwan, the spokesman to the governor of Kaduna state on Wednesday, June 7, condemned what it described as inciting, hate speech targeted at citizens of Igbo extraction.

It said: “The Kaduna State Government takes exception to the fact that the 'northern youths' did their irresponsible press conference in Kaduna.

"This government has been consistent in taking action to punish hate speech and incitement. People who may feel unhappy about irresponsible comments or actions that have taken place in other states must know that two wrongs cannot make a right, and they cannot use our state to do or say things that threaten the peace."
