Types of natural disasters in Nigeria
Virtually the entire parts of Nigeria suffers from floods and it occurs in a lot of different states. In 2012 there were four months of terrible floods.

Every year, the rainy season in Nigeria results in a level of flood depending on the region. Sometimes they can be fatal, especially in the rural zones or overcrowded ghetto, where drains do not exist at all.
History of natural disasters in Nigeria
The most horrifying Nigeria floods happened in July 2012. It killed 363 people. Over 2.1 million people were displaced.
This flood was referred to as the most harmful one experienced in the last 40 years. It affected about 7 million citizens. Losses and damages caused by the floods were up to N2.6 trillion.
On July 2 2012, there was a severe flood, which killed 35 people. The Plateau state suffered the effect the most. Heavy rains washed the dam, which caused the flooding of the local river. More than 1.5 inhabitants were without a roof. About 200 houses were destroyed.
In August, a number of floods which were caused by heavy rain storms in central Nigeria, killed 28 citizens. A high number of houses, bridges,and grounds were destroyed. About 1500 residents were evacuated.
In October the northern state of Taraba could not escape from this sad fate. At least, 19 people died in flooded settlements.

Water damaged a high number of arable lands in the state. More than 28 people were missing. Some of them had to become refugees. As if that was not enough, 10.000 houses were destroyed.
In September 2015, the same thing happened again. Heavy rains, led to the breakdown of dams in some states, caused floods in 11 Nigerian states. 53 people lost their life as a result of this flood. A lot of buildings and houses were swept away and flooded.
Again, in September 2016 after the drought, the annual rainy season came. In fact, it caused a significant damage on crops. According to the UN, 9.000 houses were completely destroyed. The number of livestock lost was about 26 thousand. People were forced to leave their homes. They were accommodated in public buildings and schools.
At least, 38 people became victims of flood in Nigeria. More than 92.000 were without shelters.
The most affected areas were the Tahua and Agades districts in the western part of the country.
The drought of 1968
Nigeria is located in the Sahel region of Africa. It is the driest place in the world. When there is no rainfall, people die and the rivers dry up. The harvest also suffers
According to estimates, the drought of 1968-1973 killed 100.000 Nigerians. There were corpses of domestic animals everywhere. People had no food to eat. They were suffering from pneumonia, whooping cough and measles. Because of these reasons, a lot of them died.
Dust storms
Dusty Storm is an atmospheric phenomenon. The wind carries a large amount of dust from the earth’s surface.
Over the past half-century (since the 1950s), the dust storms of the Sahara have increased. It caused a decrease in the thickness of the upper soil layer in Northern Nigeria.

A region’s sensibilities to natural disasters depend on different conditions. The United Nations marks the World Risk Index using four factors: susceptibility, exposure, adaptive capacities and coping capacities.
Speaking about all these factors, one can’t be accurately analysed: exposure. The other three factors are all redoubled by poverty.
According to the report by the United Nations, which was made in 2014, 4.4 billion people have been affected by natural disasters since 1994. 1.3 million people have lost their lives.
Natural disasters affect people, who are below the poverty line. This problem is getting worse and worse. It is expected that extremely poor people will live in the 50 most endangered countries by 2030.
Effects of natural disasters on human life
Millions of people are affected by natural disasters every year. Moreover, its impacts can be terrifying. Tsunamis, Typhoons, and Earthquakes disrupt people’s lives. Humanity can’t fight it. Those,who live in poor countries suffer from these disasters most of all.
