UPDATE: 3 dead, several injured as soldiers, police officers engage in gun battle

- However, some resident have also attributed the shooting to be an aftermath of a conflict between soldiers of the Nigerian military and police officers under the mobile police force

Unknown gunmen have reportedly unleashed an attack in Damaturu, Yobe state capital city.

According to a twitter user, Gulani, gunshots were heard within the city on Wednesday, April 12, morning.
Legit.ng however gathered that the shots were from a conflict between some police officers and soldiers in the state.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Nigerian army in Damaturu K.O Ogunsanya said the incident is currently under investigation.
Ogunsanya, a colonel said: “What transpired and who and who among their men were involved.”
He also said: “A statement would be issued as soon as they get to the root of the matter."
Also sources told Daily Trust that the crisis which began at the Presidential lodge in Damaturu at about 6 am lasted till 10 am.
The source said the conflict followed the abduction of a MOPOL commandant in charge of 41 Damaturu.

He said: "Yesterday, the Commandant was moving in a convey when a man intercepted, and the police attached to him harassed the man, not knowing that he is an Army officer. Later this morning, the Army kidnapped the commandant."
The source added that the mobile police had gone to the Presidential Lodge to free the commandant when the crisis erupted.
Recall that Yobe state, a North-Eastern state have experienced its share of insurgents' attack in the region.
However, in a long time the residents of Yobe have also lived in relative peace after insurgents in the state were defeated by the Nigerian military.
