Body of late Ogbemudia arrives Benin from Lagos

It was a mixture of celebration and mourning in Benin, the capital of Edo state as the remains Dr Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, a two-time governor, arrived.

Ogebmudia was both former military administrator of the defunct Midwest region as well as executive governor of old Bendel state.

With the corpse now in Benin, the journey to Ogbemudia's final resting place has started. He is reported to have prepared his own grave before his demise.

Ogbemudia died in Lagos recently at the age of 84. His body was flown in to Benin in a Nigerian Air Force jet, marked NAF 029, and accompanied by Col Idioniboye, according to PM NEWS.

The report said the body was received by the governors of Edo and Delta states, Godwin Obaseki and Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, respectively.

Also at the airport were the first son of the former army general, Samuel Ogbemudia Jr and other family members and sympathisers.

The report said the gold-plated wooden coffin was later put into a black Mercedes Benz ambulance and conveyed in a motorcade to his residence at Iheya street, Benin.
