Building automobiles using alternative materials is something Nigerians have done. Same goes for prototypes of a bewildering array of things from miniature houses to tricycles.

In 2007, 24-year-old undergraduate from Nigeria built helicopters out of old car and bike parts. Mubarak Muhammed Abdullahi, a physics student, spent eight months building the yellow model seen here, using the money he makes from repairing cellphones and computers. While some of the parts were sourced from a crashed 747, the chopper contained all sorts of surprises.

The 12-meter-long aircraft, had a height of seven feet, and was powered by a secondhand 133 horsepower engine from a Honda Civic. In the basic cockpit there were two Toyota car seats, with a couple more in the cabin behind.

Looking closely however, we can see the wheel of a motorcycle which suggests that this might just be a wooden helicopter body on wheels.

Meanwhile, about one year ago, a young talented Nigerian man has created a wonderful piece of automobile design.

The man from Bida, Niger state, said that he made his car using only pieces of wood and a motorcycle engine.
