Skills’ acquisition: 9,000 participants commence training in 17 states

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) said that 9,000 participants had commenced training in 17 states of the federation under its National Industrial Skills’ Development Programme (NISDP).

The Director-General (D-G) of ITF, Mr Joseph Ari, said this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Jos by Mrs Suleyo Fred-Chuga, ITF’s Head of the Public Affairs Unit.

He said that the training, the first phase of the scheme, had commenced in: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Taraba and Yobe States.

The D-G said that the trainees would undergo a three-month intensive skills’ acquisition training in more than 30 trades and handicraft.

He said that the trades include: plumbing and pipe fitting, welding and fabrication, carpentry and wood work, motor mechanic and cosmetology.

“The trades were chosen based on the projected values they would add to the citizens of the various states and their potentialities in providing a sustainable means of livelihoods to youths,’’ the D-G said.

Ari said the tripartite arrangement would be implemented by ITF, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the Bank of Industry (BOI).

They would jointly provide trainees with vocational and entrepreneurial skills as well as modalities for business financing, he said.

The NISDP will be officially inaugurated in other states between March 20 and March 24.
