Hijab: Save our Muslim sisters from unjust harassment from camp commandants – Muslim corper begs Buhari, NYSC DG

Editor’s note: There is no doubt that Nigeria is a multi-religious country and the right of every citizen to practise the religion of his/her choice is conspicuously enshrined in her constitution. Every religion – Islam or Christianity has rules guiding its practice, dress code and manner of worship according to the scriptures and these have been part of both religions from time immemorial. It is therefore, instructive that religion sentiment on the part of some people at the helms of affairs should not be allowed to fuel the already volatile country.

In this article, Awaisu Ibrahim Maitsidau, the Legit.ng contributor, appeals to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General, SZ Kazaure, to order all the NYSC camp commandants in all states of the federation to stop harassing, torturing female Muslim corpers who wear Hijab on their NYSC uniforms. He also begs the DG to ensure that the case of the Muslim female involved is investigated and that decisive action is taken against such commandant if found culpable of the incident.

We Muslims serving our National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benue state are really suffering if our fellow Muslim brothers, sisters and friends can help spread this news till it gets to right people please.

Hijab
Muslim corpers adorning their hijab

Recently, our camp Commandant beat up Muslim Corpers’ Association of Nigeria (MCAN’s) Amira, hitting her with a bottle on her head. Why? Because she was wearing a hijab, which was allowed by the NYSC Headquarters as part of Muslim women’s NYSC dress code.

The Commandant promptly asked her to remove her hijab, gave instructions to the soldiers to beat her and others found praying in the mosque, claiming it was for security purposes.

My Muslim brothers and sisters out there, please, in the name of the Almighty Allah, help us get this news to the right people. This camp Commandant seems so entrenched that even the NYSC state coordinator couldn't do anything to call him to order.

We believe that the Nigerian constitution guarantees all citizens the right to practise their religions, their dress code, so far as it is not offensive in Nigeria.
