Joachim Iroko, the man who was arrested in 2016 for allegedly naming his dog ‘Buhari’ appeared in court today, Wednesday, January 18, 2017 with his lawyer, Inibehe Effiong.

However, the proceedings in the case: ‘COP v Iroko’ at the Magistrate's Court of Ogun state holden at Ota could notprogress following the absence of presiding magistrate, PJ Ojikutu who was said to be attending a screening exercise.

Iroko, 41, was arrested in August 2016 and detained by the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly naming his pet dog after President Muhammadu Buhari.

The arrest provoked outrage across the country while the police subsequently arraigned him in court for conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

In court on Wednesday, Iroko was represented by three Lagos-based legal practitioners: Adeola Samuel Opeyemi from Lead Solicitors; Tosin Adesioye from the law firm of Adegboruwa & Company as well as human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong from Inibehe Effiong Chambers.

The prosecution, BG Emenike, a deputy superintendent of police was also in court.

The case has now been adjourned to March 20, 2017 for hearing of the ‘motion on notice’ challenging the jurisdiction of the court and the competence of the charge.
