LAUTECH students fight over N500,000 gift from governor

The student leaders of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, have thrown caution to the wind, as they fought over a N500,000 gift from Oyo state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.
The students who were initially protesting the closure of their university, which has dragged on for like seven months, before the governor made the gift.
According to Premium Times, students from various universities had gathered for the protest in Ibadan, when the governor agreed to meet with their representatives to speak with them and assure them that he was committed to re-opening the school.

The governor was said to have released some money for the entertainment of the representatives after the meeting.
However, a disagreement arose among the student over how to share the money gift, and it soon deteriorated into a free-for-all fight, the student outside the State secretariat office of the governor.
Fawole Israel, one of the student leaders told the press that the commotion occurred because the representative who collected the money decided to spray it on the protesters.
Olanrewaju Umar, an aide to the Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), blamed the student leaders of LAUTECH for collecting money from the governor.
Oyedeji Ahmed another LAUTECH student condemned the gesture of the governor.

“At a time when Oyo cannot pay salaries, why will the governor give out N500, 000 to students?” Mr Ahmed quipped, adding that the gesture was an encouragement of “corruption”.
Bolaji Azeez, the senior assistant to the Governor on Youth and Students Affairs, , however defended Ajimobi, saying he only acted as a caring father.
Meanwhile, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state on Monday, January 10, 2017, inaugurated a nine-member governing board to oversee the running policy of the LAUTECH in Osogbo and create a miracle centre where those expected to die would live.
