Unknown gunmen kill pastor in Adamawa state

- Unknown gunmen killed a popular pastor in Adamawa state on Sunday, January 19

- The deceased was a cleric at the popular Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN)

- The pastor had served in two previous administrations in the northeastern state

A report by The Nation indicates that unknown gunmen have killed a pastor, Rev Denis Bagauri, in Adamawa state.

According to the report, the attack occurred during midnight on Sunday, January 19 at his residence in Mayo Belwa area, close to the state capital, Yola.

Late Bagauri was a cleric at the popular Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN).

His death has sparked massive reactions and panic in the state especially as a journalist in the state was killed in similar circumstances recently.

One of his friends, Alhaji Muhammad Buba, said: “They killed him last night. A member of the family told me they have taken his corpse to the mortuary.”

Bagauri is also a politician and he became popular in the state for his role as the voice of Christians in government when Murtala Nyako and Mohammed Jibrila Bindow held sway as governors of the northeast state.

He was liaison officer for Christians under Murtala Nyako and served under the Bindow administration as senior special assistant on religion matters.

Meanwhile, villagers in Rumache, Kukoki ward of Shiroro local government area of Niger state were fast asleep when armed bandits struck in the early hours of Friday, January 17, killing their traditional ruler.

The bandits murdered Mallam Ahmad Yakubu Rumache at about 2 am before abducting 17 people in four different communities. Among those abducted is the son of the murdered traditional ruler.

In a related development, 14 people were killed on Thursday, January 16, when bandits attacked Babban Rafi village in Gwalli district of Gummi local government area of Zamfara state.

The bandits who arrived in about 43 motorbikes first made a stop at Barikin Daji village before proceeding to Babban Rafi village.

“When they laid siege on the (Barikin Daji) village, the gunmen asked residents to stay indoors. They started going from house to house collecting mobile phones, money and other valuables. They told the residents that they were heading to Babban Rafi village on Jihad mission," an eye-witness said.
